How ROI Works
Return on investment (ROI) measures the gain or loss generated on an investment relative to its cost. The basic formula is (current value - initial investment) รท initial investment ร 100. A positive ROI means you made money; a negative ROI means you lost money. Annualized ROI accounts for the time value of money, showing your average yearly return. This is important for comparing investments held for different periods. An investment that doubles in 5 years has a much higher annualized return than one that takes 10 years to double.
