Annual Fee

Definition

An annual fee is a yearly charge by a credit card issuer or financial institution for the privilege of using the card or account.

Explanation

Annual fees are common on rewards credit cards that offer travel points, cash back, or premium benefits. Fees range from $0 to $695+ for premium cards. A card with an annual fee is worth it only if the benefits (rewards, insurance, lounge access) exceed the cost.

Many issuers waive the fee for the first year. Some cards have no annual fee but offer fewer rewards. Always calculate whether the fee is justified by your spending patterns.

Example

A travel card with a $95 annual fee offers $300 in travel credits and airport lounge access. The net benefit is $205 after the fee, making it worthwhile.
